In 2013, Niven was awarded a Global Trade Analysis Project Research Fellowship for outstanding research.
Niven has strong links to policy makers and has advised several organizations on international trade matters, including the OECD and the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. He was also a lead researcher on a recent European Commission project on non-tariff measures in agri-food trade.
Prior to joining MIT, Niven held a faculty position at the University of Otago. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Nottingham and a Master of Economics from Australian National University. Niven also has an interest in sports economics, particularly sports ranking systems.
