Abstract:
The research explores the various patterns and structures of inter-country EU-27 exports within a network analysis context. In this regard its objective is to employ a novel weighted network analysis approach, and showcase its usefulness for the international business literature. Three novel weighted centrality measures are employed, which show and benchmark the importance of individual countries in the weighted network. In particular, a high weighted betweeness centrality score for Estonia indicates is function as an export interface between the main economic countries in continental Europe and Scandinavia. The weighted generalized blockmodeling procedure identifies five subgroups of countries. The network visualizations show a strong core-periphery structure of the weighted network, and outline two interesting Girvan-Newman-type cliques of trading countries. The results on country export patterns also hold important implications for the so called small states’ perspective in international trade, and show small states do not per se focus more their exports to neighboring markets.
